This Sunday signifies a new direction and a new beginning for the Barrack Street precinct.

From 12 noon Barrack Street (between Wellington Street and St Georges Terrace) will be converted to two-way traffic.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said over the past five months the City has achieved a great deal more than just convert the flow of traffic on Barrack Street.

“We have also revitalised the shopping precinct with new paving, street lights and soon to be installed street furniture and bike racks.

“Enhancing the pedestrian and shopper experience along Barrack Street was a priority as it’s one of the few remaining inner-city streets that’s home to predominately privately owned businesses and independent retailers.”

The new two-way road configuration improves safety for cyclists with dedicated cycle lanes and will provide a new southbound access route to St Georges Terrace, Barrack Square Jetty and the soon to be opened Elizabeth Quay.

The Barrack Street two-way conversion and enhancement project cost $6 million and is part of an overall City of Perth scheme to convert one-way streets to two-way traffic where possible, to improve accessibility within the city.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the Barrack Street project was a massive undertaking and the City of Perth is thankful to all the nearby retailers for their patience during the project.

“What was once a traffic thoroughfare is now a revitalised pedestrian friendly precinct,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“With Christmas fast approaching it is the perfect time to explore the brand new Barrack Street precinct and support your local businesses – you may even bump into Santa if you are around on Saturday 12 December.”
