The City of Perth is set to join hundreds-of-thousands of people around the country for the annual Garage Sale Trail. And as a part of this national sustainability event, a massive sea container has been transported into the Murray Street Mall.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the City is partnering with Red Cross and other charitable organisations to host a ‘Treasure From Trash Bash’ in Forrest Place on Saturday 24 October.

“Red Cross will host a collection drive in the week leading up to the event, accepting donations of preloved items in the ‘Treasure Trove’ – the sea container in the Murray Street Mall,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“The Treasure Trove will transform into a pop up of op shops on event day, joined by other charities, where you can shop for a bargain, support the reuse movement, and help raise money for charities.”

Garage Sale Trail is a national event where garage sales are held on the one big day across the country, with an expected one thousand sales being held in WA by households, retailers and community groups.

“Next week we encourage all residents and workers to drop off their unwanted belongings,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“Red Cross will gladly accept quality items such as women's, men's, and children's clothing, fashion accessories, books, toys, and homewares.

“One person’s trash is another’s treasure, and the Treasure From Trash Bash is a fantastic way to pass on what you don’t want, to someone who does.”

Donate items to the Treasure Trove – the sea container in the Murray Street Mall between Monday and Friday, 19 – 23 October, 7am – 2pm.

The Treasure From Trash Bash is happening in Forrest Place on Saturday 24 October between 10am – 4pm featuring pop up op shops by charities including Red Cross, Vinnies, Good Sammy's, Save The Children, and Anglicare. Food Rescue will also be supplying fresh fruit, vegetables and fruit juice for a gold coin donation.

“Pencil in Saturday 24 October in your diary and prepare for a fun day of hunting for bargains,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“Garage Sale Trail helps people to think creatively about how we can reuse items that might otherwise be put out for waste collection, and possibly end up in landfill.”
